Czech clothing brand Pietro Filipi will experience its business reboot. The brand has been bought from KARA Trutnov, or the investment group Natland, by DaniDarx, which owns the Trenýrkárna.cz e-shop and produces underwear from Czech brands Styx and Nedeto, all with the support of investment partner SPM. The business partners have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
Natland acquired the Pietro Filipi trademarks in an auction organised by the insolvency administrator after Pietro Filipi went bankrupt. Subsequently, KARA became the owner of the trademarks, whose new business story was started by Natland in cooperation with the original owner Zdeněk Rinthe. Now KARA, a traditional manufacturer and seller of Czech fur products, is re-established on the retail market. Pietro Filipi and KARA together belonged to the bankrupt C2H holding at the same time.
“KARA is a great example that if you have a good team, brand or product, with our experience and expertise it is possible to successfully rescue and recover a business in trouble. KARA was able to recover and after the collapse of Pietro Filipi we wanted to save at least a brand that had value. At the same time, we wanted to give young creatives the opportunity and ideas on how to continue to deal with such a brand,” says Tomáš Raška, founder and majority owner of Natland, to whose portfolio KARA belongs.
“We were considering two or three directions to take, but it was not entirely in my power to fundamentally and substantially revive KARA and at the same time rebuild the Pietro Filipi brand from the ground up. After long discussions, we gradually came to the conclusion that we had to put the brand in professional hands and preferably with Czech origin,” said Zdeněk Rinth, head of KARA and added: “After several discussions and a relatively high level of interest from the market, we were approached by the vision of the DaniDarx group, which had already had the experience of restarting another brand in the past. In the final rounds of the selection process, they seemed to us to be the ideal partner to develop the brand further.”
Trenýrkárna.cz, the largest domestic e-shop with men’s underwear belonging to DaniDarx, has experienced significant growth in recent years. Owners Ruslan Skopal and Adam Rožánek decided to strengthen this growth at the end of 2022, and for the first time since the company was founded, to take advantage of financial support from an investor. This is the Czech investment group SPM, founded by Slavomir Pavlíček and Marek Španel, which actively directs its investments to form partnerships with ambitious Czech entrepreneurs with proven track records. “I am glad that, thanks to our support, the traditional Czech fashion brand Pietro Filipi is once again gaining a stable home after turbulent years. From my point of view, it definitely deserves a new chance to establish itself not only in the Czech Republic, but also on foreign markets. We are looking forward to its further development in the hands of Trenýrkárna.cz management, in whom we have had full confidence for a long time,” says Slavomír Pavlíček, partner of SPM Invest Group, adding that the fact that the Czech brand Styx manufactured in the Czech Republic is an important part of Trenýrkárna.cz played an important role in the interest in joining the company. The partnership thus represents the type of investment that the group actively seeks – prospective entrepreneurs who have built a stable and profitable business with a clear competitive advantage and are looking for capital for leapfrog growth that is supported by a clear vision of how to achieve it.
This reason for SPM’s entry into Trenýrkárna.cz illustrates the story of why Pietro Filipi remains in Czech hands and why the team of Ruslan Skopal and Adam Rožánek will return the products of this brand to the Czech market. “The acquisition of the Pietro Filipi brand is, of course, the event of this year for us. We are thrilled throughout the company to have received the trust of the Natland investment group and KARA. The goal is to give Czech men and women back the brand they love, and quickly. We have now launched our first collection of Pietro Filipi clothing, including men’s boxers, swimwear, women’s underwear, socks and bathrobes. And we certainly don’t want to stop there. If customers express interest, and we believe they will, we want to gradually start expanding the portfolio. The Pietro Filipi brand and its loyal fans, of which there are many in the Czech Republic, certainly deserve it.”
The Pietro Filipi brand was founded in 1993 by Peter Hendrych and soon gained fans among both men and women thanks to its range of clothing and accessories. Gradually, the Pietro Filipi brand opened its own stores, but after being acquired by the investment company C2H, it sought to enter foreign markets. However, due to many concurrent situations during the coronavirus crisis, the company went into insolvency proceedings.
